ORTOFON
Behind the MC Windfeld
Historically,
Ortofon has always followed its own path with regard to the mechanical design
of the cartridge housing, because mechanical rigidity and total freedom from
resonance in the audible range is a precondition for optimal sound quality. In
the MC Windfeld, Ortofon continues to build on the structure of the Kontrapunkt
range, in which the cartridge housing’s contact with the pick-up arm takes
place through three hard, well-defined points, i.e. a kind of spikes. This
means that the mechanical integration of the cartridge and the pick-up arm are
always absolutely perfect.
We have
reinforced the construction by allowing one central structure, made in a
special alloy, to reach from the 2.5 mm threaded holes at the top all the way
down around the motor system at the bottom. This makes the MC Windfeld Ortofon’s
strongest and most resonance-free cartridge yet, with a direct mechanical
connection between the motor and the tonearm. What this means for the dynamics,
resolution and richness of detail in the sound simply has to be experienced.
But the
Ortofon MC Windfeld is also unique in cosmetic terms: the parts of the
cartridge housing are produced with matt and polished black surfaces. The
underside facing the record is covered by a new shield, which reinforces the
mechanical structure. Per
Windfeld’s characteristic initials in gold, which decorate
the sides of the cartridge housing, stand as a signal to the outside world that
this technologically advanced cartridge is Ortofon’s finest, most accurate and
in our own opinion also best-sounding design.
We recommend a thorough listening test using the best equipment, and invite serious audiophiles to pay tribute to Per Windfeld with this serious candidate for “the world’s best cartridge”.

New Design Elements
The new appearace of the design is a
result of a co-operation between professional industrial designers and
the Ortofon Chief Engineer Per Windfeld. Were the most advanced
technology and processing should have a very high priority. During the
developing process it became more and more evident, that the
requirements to both outside as well as inside parts became so
demanding with respect to details and finish, that usual manufacturing
procedures were insufficient. The only method that would meet our
requirements, was found to be the so-called Metal Injection Moulding
process (MIM). This process is based on very fine metal powders being
mixed into a polymer and injected into a mould. After moulding the
parts will pass heat treatment and sintering processes and the result
is solid metal parts of either stainless steel to be used for the outer
design or highly conductive iron for the magnetic circuit. Very low
wall thicknes together with miniaturisation of the magnetic circuit
made it possible to keep the cartridge weight as low as 10.5 grams. All
parts on the Ortofon Jubilee model are pressed together to a almost
solid unit, so no use of screws or glue was necessary. As mentioned, a
new unique magnetic circuit was developed in order to concentrate
magnetic fluxlines in the air gap with the smallest amount of leakage
in the circuit. The solution was to place the damping system inside the
Neodymium magnet itself. By doing so we gained a raise in output
voltage of 35% compared to the MC Rohmann cartridge. The well known
Ortofon WRD-damping system (Wide Range Damping) is also implemented in
the MC Jubilee cartridge, controlling the high - and low frequency
damping separately. The effective mass has been reduced in the new
stylus/cantilever system by using a very thin Boron rod. This material
is extremely stiff and even more lightweight compared to aluminium.
Besides is the velocity of sound almost 3 times higher compared to that
of aluminium. Combined with the nude high-polished Shibata diamond
stylus at the end of the cantilever, we have developed one of the new
elements responsible for the new sound. 6-nines 99.9999% pure silver is
used for the coils on the armature whereby the DC resistance has been
kept as low as 5 Ohm.

Kontrapunkt c has a conical aluminum cantilever is fitted with a Nude FG 80 diamond stylus. Coils are wound from 99.9999% pure silver. A neodymium magnet and an output of 470 mV ensure an extremely high signal-to-noise ratio with any MC Preamplifier. Kontrapunkt C incorporates Ortofon’s unique FSE (field stabilizing element) to achieve optimal frequency response linearity by stabilizing the magnetic field around the armature-especially during complex crescendo passages- and to ensure consistently high channel separation across the frequency band. Kontrapunkt c is a true high end reference cartridge, conveying music with supreme precision, impact and dynamics. Its stereo imaging capabilities illuminate the furthest corners of the soundstage in all three dimensions. A high resolution audio system is required to fully explore the information retrieval potential of this cartridge

Kontrapunkt b has a very thin Ruby cantilever mounted with the super polished nude FG 80 stylus. Coils are made from 6- Nines pure silver wire and the output is as high as 470µVolt at 5 cm/sec. by 1 kHz. Compared to MC Jubilee the sound picture is more open, grandiose and dynamic with a very present perspective. The musical performance of the Kontrapunkt b is depending on the equipment, room and music program. Also variations of the resistive load, can influence sound image to some extend, where higher values around 100-200 Ohm will open details further. But not less than 10 Ohm will tighten sound image. The cart ´ridge seems to work well in small, soft rooms with loudspeakers having moderate tweeters.

KONTRAPUNK H

Kontrapunkt h has a nude Fine Line elliptical diamond stylus mounted on an aluminum cantilever (as in Kontrapunkt a) in conjunction with our innovative FSE (Field Stabilizing Element) provides exceptionally open bass and midrange with smooth, natural overtones. The Kontrapunkt family resemblance is obvious with outstanding channel separation across the fundamental frequency range and into the extreme upper frequencies, contributing to sublime dynamics and musical clarity. This cartridge is recommended to enthusiasts who prefer a degree of mildness and smoothness, as opposed to the Kontrapunkt c with its more expressive approach to such parameters as dynamic high-frequency detail.A 100 Ohm load is recommended as a starting point but higher values may be preferred for added “air” around the performers.Output is 470 mV from coils of 99.9999% pure silver and a neodymium magnet.

MC Rohmann is named after Ortofon’s former managing director, in honour of many years of service. This cartridge body is milled from a solid block of aluminium and the dark blue anodized body exploits aluminum’s special damping characteristics to suppress resonance. The slim-line Nude Orto-Line diamond ensures flawless tracking of even the most dynamic passages. MC Rohmann conveys the full range of detail and subtle nuance, even when a powerful brass section competes with the fine nuances of quieter instruments such as the flute or harpsichord.A high performance MC transformer or MC preamplifier is recommended. Recommended load: 100 Ohms or more.

The sound from the Rondo Bronze cartridge is very detailed in its spectrum and differentiates the sound source in a refined and homogenous manner. Big orchestral music will be reproduced powerful yet well controlled and open up space around the instrument. The Nude FG80 diamond is mounted on a conical aluminum cantilever yielding very linear frequency response over the entire frequency range-at the same time ensuring very high tracking ability.Recommended load resistance between 500 and 100 Ohm depending on personal preference of openness. Higher load resistance will always tend to moreliveliness and space in sound-image.
