The Koetsu Black's biggest crime is that it's not the newest kid on the block in this price range. The Black has quietly gained internal improvements, most notably the use of silver-clad copper wire like the upper models.

In the 1970s, Sugano began to experiment with phono cartridges by substituting his own parts in commercially available models. His keen ear and deductive reasoning, combined with an artist's sensibilities, led to the creation of what would become a legend in audio. Sensing the moment, Sugano named his cartridge after his hero, Koetsu.

Sugano's quest led him to enlist universities, specialized industries and master craftspeople to create the special parts to go into his masterpieces. One of the first to use 4 nines copper (99.99% pure), curent production uses 6 nines copper (99.9999% pure). Platinum signature models feature silver cladding of the 6 nines copper, a process where a silver sheath is slowly drawn over the copper conductor.

Ultra-pure iron square plate formers were sourced for their most predictable magnetic characteristics and lowest oxidation. Pre-aged to the perfect consistency, rubber suspension parts are sourced under license with a rubber damper manufacturer. Special magnetic materials, including Alnico have been featured. Today, samarium-coblalt is used with platinum magnets reserved for the flagship models. Japanese craftsmen carve the rosewood bodies, lacquer coat the Urushi bodies, or cut stone for the onyx Platinum. Styli are specially designed and precision ground for Koetsu.

Today, Sugano's sons have revived his art and continue to create musical masterpieces under the watchful eye of the old master. For every music lover, your journey to musical nirvana is incomplete without a Koetsu phono cartridge in your system.

The all-new open-chassis MILLENNIA Vacuum Turntable System is SOTA’s latest assault on the State-Of-The-Art in LP playback equipment.  Like the critically acclaimed SOTA COSMOS, the MILLENNIA utilizes an ultra-rigid, unified sub-assembly utilizing a critically damped one piece sub-chassis, milled from a one inch thick solid aluminum plate.  Unlike the COSMOS and previous SOTA top-of-the-line turntables models however, the MILLENNIA incorporates a spring-less, hanging four-point balanced-mass visco-elastic suspension system.  The multi-layer suspension utilizes a variety of materials including Axidyneâ, a unique energy absorbing visco-elastic polymer, to provide excellent outside energy rejection at critical midrange frequencies. 

The MILLENNIA uses SOTA’s internally damped, multi-layer 15-pound vacuum platter system with the ultra Vinyl Format platter mat.  It incorporates SOTA’s inverted bearing assembly design, utilizing a polished sapphire thrust plate with zirconium bearing.  The SOTA self-sensing record-hold-down system uses a high-tech pneumatic sensing circuit to provide vacuum clamping and maintenance of exact low-pressure vacuum hold-down.  The MILLENNIA’s synthesized sine-wave drive (with electronic speed control and speed change) 24 pole A/C Stepper Motor drive system is housed in a separate, high-mass stand alone cabinet and is powered by SOTA’s Electronic Flywheel power supply.   Additional damping has been added to the cabinet as well as adjustable feet for fine tuning.  To learn more of the basic goals of achieving maximum information retrieval.

The MILLENNIA Vacuum Turntable includes the Cosmos Armboard and Reflex Clamp.  The Cosmos Armboard is multi layers of acrylic, aluminum and lead in a constrained mode and high polished.  The ultimate mechanical clamping system, the SOTA Reflex Clamp assures intimate contact between the record and the mat over its entire surface.

Behind the MC Windfeld

Historically, Ortofon has always followed its own path with regard to the mechanical design of the cartridge housing, because mechanical rigidity and total freedom from resonance in the audible range is a precondition for optimal sound quality. In the MC Windfeld, Ortofon continues to build on the structure of the Kontrapunkt range, in which the cartridge housing’s contact with the pick-up arm takes place through three hard, well-defined points, i.e. a kind of spikes. This means that the mechanical integration of the cartridge and the pick-up arm are always absolutely perfect.

We have reinforced the construction by allowing one central structure, made in a special alloy, to reach from the 2.5 mm threaded holes at the top all the way down around the motor system at the bottom. This makes the MC Windfeld Ortofon’s strongest and most resonance-free cartridge yet, with a direct mechanical connection between the motor and the tonearm. What this means for the dynamics, resolution and richness of detail in the sound simply has to be experienced.

But the Ortofon MC Windfeld is also unique in cosmetic terms: the parts of the cartridge housing are produced with matt and polished black surfaces. The underside facing the record is covered by a new shield, which reinforces the mechanical structure. Per Windfeld’s characteristic initials in gold, which decorate the sides of the cartridge housing, stand as a signal to the outside world that this technologically advanced cartridge is Ortofon’s finest, most accurate and in our own opinion also best-sounding design.

We recommend a thorough listening test using the best equipment, and invite serious audiophiles to pay tribute to Per Windfeld with this serious candidate for “the world’s best cartridge”.

Ortofon was founded in 1918 by two Danish engineers, Axel Petersen and Arnold Poulsen. These two pioneers had one very clear objective in mind - to put sound onto film, and with this, they established the Electrical Fonofilms Company A/S, which later on was renamed Ortofon A/S. A few years later, in the Palace Theatre, Copenhagen, they were able to present the first fully-synchronized sound films and in so doing, created a world sensation
